2018 New Year’s Resolution: Organize Your Life

2018 Goals list

Eight percent.

That’s a statistic that gets thrown around anytime someone writes an article about New Year’s resolutions. As in: Only eight percent of people who make resolutions stick to them.

But don’t let that figure keep you from your self-improvement efforts this year. One of the best ways to make sure you stick to your resolutions is by keeping them realistic.

Start at home, and use our New Year’s resolution checklist to help organize your life.

Don’t try to organize your entire house all at once. Take baby steps. Maybe you can start with your car. Throw away old receipts, pick up the toys your kids have left behind, etc.

From there, work your way up, organizing closets and smaller rooms, before tackling the more cluttered sections of your home.

2. Into the High-Clutter Zone

Messy garageIt might be helpful to think of decluttering like any other remodeling project: you need to start with a plan. While it might be tempting to just buy a bunch of storage bins and start clearing shelves and cabinets, you might end up wasting time and money.

Take the time to study the situation so you know precisely what you need to declutter your house and organize your life.

This is a key point when tackling sections of your home that have a lot of storage space. Decluttering your house is a marathon, not a sprint, so don’t burn yourself out.

3. Take stock of your stuff

If that’s the case, it’s time to play a mental game: Keep, Discard or Donate.

Be ruthless, and hang onto only those things you and your family need and love. Donate the rest to a local charity (you might be able to get a tax write off) and throw away anything that can’t be given away, sold or recycled.

4. Organizing, room by room

Again, this isn’t a one-day project. But don’t let that overwhelm you. Just take one room at a time. If December 31 arrived and you haven’t hit every room in your home, that’s OK.
