Eight percent.
That’s a statistic that gets thrown around anytime someone writes an article about New Year’s resolutions. As in: Only 8% of people who make resolutions stick to them.
But don’t let that dismal number keep you from your self-improvement efforts this year! One of the best ways to make sure you stick to your resolutions is by keeping them realistic, and we have easy suggestions to help you get started and accomplish some of your goals this year.
Start at home, and use our New Year’s resolution checklist to help organize your life.
1. Start small
Don’t try to organize your entire house all at once! Take baby steps. Maybe you can start with your car. Throw away old receipts, pick up the toys your kids have left behind, etc.
From there, work your way up, organizing closets and smaller rooms, before tackling the more cluttered sections of your home.
2. Into the High-Clutter Zone
It might be helpful to think of de-cluttering like any other remodeling project: you need to start with a plan. While it might be tempting to just buy a bunch of storage bins and start clearing shelves and cabinets, you might end up wasting time and money.
Take the time to study the situation so you know precisely what you need to de-clutter your house and organize your life.
This is a key point when tackling sections of your home that have a lot of storage space. De-cluttering your house is a marathon, not a sprint, so don’t burn yourself out!
3. Take stock of your stuff
As you evaluate your space and the things you’ve put into it, you might find that you have too many items to fit into that space.
If that’s the case, it’s time to play a mental game: Keep, Discard or Donate.
Be ruthless, and hang onto only those things you and your family need and love. Donate the rest to a local charity (you might be able to get a tax write off) and throw away anything that can’t be given away, sold or recycled.
4. Organizing, room by room
Again, this isn’t a one-day project! But don’t let that overwhelm you. Just take one room at a time. If December 31 arrives and you haven’t hit every room in your home, that’s OK.
You’ve at least managed to organize your life by de-cluttering some of your home. And don’t worry: we’ve spent the last few years offering up tips for organizing virtually every part of the home:
- Closets – Obviously we covered closets several times, talking about how to organize a reach-in closet, making closets handicap accessible, and getting them organized for summer.
- Playrooms – As you might imagine, these spaces can be the most cluttered part of the home. In this post, we talked about how to get your kids into the habit of keeping their toys organized.
- Garages – Your garage can be many things: a place to park your car, a workspace, a man cave or a place to host BBQs.
