The Psychological Benefits of an Organized Life

As Shape magazine reported last year, there are psychological benefits to organizing your home. Some of these benefits include:

1. You Could Improve Your Eating Habits

Research has shown that a less cluttered environment leads people to make healthier choices when it comes to food.

 A study published in the journal Psychological Science in 2013 found that people who worked in an organized space for 10 minutes were twice as likely to pick an apple over a chocolate bar for a snack compared to those who worked in a cluttered office.

“Clutter is stressful for the brain, so you’re more likely to resort to coping mechanisms such as choosing comfort foods or overeating than if you spend time in neater surroundings,” Dr. Eva Selhub told Shape.

And when people are organized, they’re more likely to buy more nutritious foods and plan their meals. Without that planning, there’s a good chance you’ll resort to fast or packaged foods.

2. You’ll Get More Exercise

Organized people are more likely to stick to a workout routine, according to a study in the Journal of Obesity. It found that people who set goals and record their progress are more likely to adhere to their exercise regimen than people who just tried to wing it.

3. You’ll Have Better Relationships

“For couples, clutter can create tension and conflict,” Dr. Selhub told Shape. “And the time you spend looking for missing items can also take away from time you could be spending together.”

And organizing your home can affect your non-romantic relationships as well. A messy house might prevent you from having people over, and – as Selhub puts it – “create a physical and emotional boundary around you.”

4. You’ll Be More Productive

Like we said above, clutter distracts us, and once again, science is on our side. According to the Journal of Neuroscience, looking at too many things at the same time interferes with the brain’s ability to process information.

And being more organized at work makes us more efficient and productive, which means you won’t need to stay at work late, giving you more time to relax, sleep, exercise, etc.

5. You’ll Get More Sleep

A survey by the National Sleep Foundation found that people who make their beds each morning are nearly 20 percent more likely to get a good night’s rest. Three quarters of the people surveyed said they slept better on freshly washed sheets.

An organized life leads to better sleep. If you live a cluttered life, you’re more likely to be dealing with daytime tasks – whether that means work or household chores – well into the night, making it harder for you to get to sleep.

6. You’ll Reduce Stress and Depression

Organizing your home can make you less stressed. A study in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin found that women who described their homes as cluttered – or who said they had a lot of unfinished projects at home – felt more depressed and fatigued. They also had higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Normally, our cortisol levels decline as the day ends. But when things are disorganized, that decline doesn’t happen, which affects our mood, our sleep and our health.
