If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what is the significance of a clean desk?” – Dr. J. Laurence Peter.

We can buy his argument, to a point. A lot of geniuses—Einstein, Mark Twain, Steve Jobs – were known for having cluttered workspaces.

But a cluttered closet is something different. Having your clothes strewn all over the floor of your closet can leave you feeling overwhelmed. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Read on to find our guide to closet storage organization.

  1. Start by taking everything out of your closet and making an inventory of what’s there. You may want to group them by season.

  2. Clothes organization becomes easier when there’s less to work with. Put aside any items that are ripped, worn or stained so you can discard them. Anything that you no longer wear but is still in good condition you can donate.

  3. If you’re conducting your closet storage organization in the winter, store your summer clothes in storage boxes. (Or your winter clothes, if you’re organizing in the summer.) Keep your out-of-season clothing boxed and tagged to make them easy to find, and put them on high shelves.

  4. Shoes and other small items can go into boxes. Just make sure you label those boxes.

  5. Installing some extra shelves can give you a new space to store sweaters, shoes and shirts. You may also want to install some extra hooks and racks for purses, hats and jackets.

  6. You can store accessories in clear plastic drawers, or hang them on old thread racks. And proper folding can make a lot of difference. Learn the right way to hang and fold clothes to save space.

If these clothes organization tips aren’t enough, you can always get a little more creative. For example:

PVC Pipe Organizers

Use sections of PVC pipe to organize stockings, socks, leggings, scarves and other accessories. Cut pieces of pipe so that they’ll fit the height of your drawers or shelves, and sand down any rough edges.

Flip Flop Hangers

Do you have a lot of flip flops? Keep track of them this summer with this simple trick: Get some old wire hangers, and snip away the bottom part using a needle-nosed pliers. Then use your hands and the pliers to bend the hanger so it resembles – as one tutorial put it – a stick figure flexing his muscles. Your old hanger has become a pair of hooks for your flip-flops.

Multiple Hangers

Save space in your closet with a quick, inexpensive trip to a home improvement store. You’ll need to pick up a package of S hooks and a few lengths of chain.

Hang the S hooks from the rod in your closet, and the length of chain from the hook. A 15-link piece of chain should hold about 8 hangers.

The Magic Of Shoeboxes

The next time you buy a new pair of shoes, hold on to the box. Old shoeboxes can become a key piece of your clothes organization efforts.

Instead of letting t-shirts or underwear pile up in your dresser drawers, use boxes to keep them organized and – if you want – color coordinated.
