Tips for organizing your space
- Focus on the areas that are most utilized or most visible
- Consider how often you need to access items
- Group similar items together
- Discard metal hangers (or return them to the cleaners) to eliminate sagging clothes and rust stains
- Keep items visible for easier selection of coordinates
- Fold, never hang, sweaters and knits and avoid squashing shelf items
- Everyday shoes go on lower shelves; special occasion shoes should be boxed, labeled and stored on higher shelves
- Store purses flat and stuffed with tissue to retain their shape
- Store scarves neatly folded on an eye-level shelf for easy selection
- Rotate "stock" - as you add new items, discard under-used clothes
- Use the proper hangers. Open-end slack hangers and skirt hangers with clips use less space lengthwise.
- Eliminate wasted space — dress for the body you have now — rather than having clothes in your closets that are not being functional. This allows room for everything else to be visible and easy to access.
- If you haven't used something in 6 months or more, ask yourself, "Do I still need to hang on to it?"
- If you are fluctuating in weight because of pregnancy, store items no longer fitting in a vacuum bag to save space. Later you can store or swap items and save for next pregnancy or donate to a friend.
